Due to their awkward shape, packing lamps for moving may seem difficult but we show you how to pack your lamps in 3 easy steps.
What You Will Need:
- Moving boxes
- Bubble wrap
- Packing paper
- Packing peanuts
- Tape
- Fragile tape or stickers
1. Take apart the lamp
The first thing you should do is take apart your lamp. The bulb, lamp shade and lamp base should be packed separately to minimise damages.
Unscrew the bulb and place it to one side. Then remove the lamp shade so the shade and base are in two separate pieces.
Wrap the cord around the lamp base or use cable ties so they are neat and won’t get in the way.
If you have multiple different lamps, you want to pack each lamp one by one so parts don’t get mixed up.
2. Carefully wrap the lamp
If you do not have the original packaging your lamp came in then you will need to purchase moving boxes. Moving boxes are great as they come in all different sizes so you should be able to find one that suits your lamp. Measure your lamp before you buy the box so you can make sure you get the right sized box.
Wrap the light bulb in bubble wrap or packing paper. It is a good idea to place all light bulbs in a small box or container and clearly label them. You can also use the boxes with cardboard dividers that are used to pack cups and glasses as they are the perfect size for light bulbs as well.
Wrap the lamp shade with one layer of packing paper. Be sure to use plain white packing paper and not newspaper. The ink from newspaper can transfer onto your lamp shade and stain it.
Place the lamp base on its side and wrap the lamp base with bubble wrap until it is completely covered.
3. Pack the lamp in boxes
If the lampshades can easily be nested within each other, then you can neatly stack them to pack multiple lamp shades in the same box. Place the lampshades in an appropriate sized box and fill the empty spaces with packing peanuts or scrunched up packing paper to add as padding. You can also use tea towels, socks or any other soft materials as padding. You want to minimise the empty space in the box to prevent the box from getting crushed or squished during the move.
For your lamp base, choose a box that is taller than your lamp base. Construct the moving box placing extra tape on the bottom for additional reinforcement. Place a layer of scrunched packing paper on the bottom of the box for padding. Place the lamp base inside of the prepared box. Depending on the size of the box, you can pack more than one lamp base per box if it comfortably fits without causing any damage. Then fill the empty spaces in the box with packing peanuts or scrunched up packing paper.
Clearly mark each box with fragile stickers or tape and note down what is inside the box to make unpacking a smooth and easy process e.g. master bedroom white lampshade. You also want to mark on the box which is the right way up so the removalists know which way to stand the box inside the truck.
